Lorde’s “Solar Power” Album Will be Eco-Conscious

A few weeks ago, Lorde surprised the world with her first new song in three years, “Solar Power.”  Now, she shares more details about her forthcoming album and tour.

Solar Power Arrives in August

Just after the release of “Solar Power,” Lorde sent a sweet email to fans as she announced details of her album Solar Power. The project will feature 14 tracks to be released on August 20. Alongside that, she also announced she will be going on tour next spring. It kicks off in New Zealand in February 2022 and arrives in North America in April. She said she’s focused on minimizing the carbon footprint of her tour, and revealed she won’t be returning to social media any time soon.

“The album is a celebration of the natural world, an attempt at immortalizing the deep, transcendent feelings I have when I’m outdoors,” Lorde says of the follow-up to 2017’s Melodrama in a press statement. “In times of heartache, grief, deep love, or confusion, I look to the natural world for answers. I’ve learned to breathe out and tune in. This is what came through.”

Lorde Will Offer Fans a “Music Box” CD-Alternative

Within that same announcement, Lorde also unveiled plans to forgo a CD release for Solar Power; opting instead for a disc-less alternative called a “Music Box” that the New Zealand pop star designed as a more environmentally conscious collectible. The Music Box for Solar Power will include handwritten notes from Lorde, exclusive photos, and other visual content. As well, a download card instead of a physical copy of the album itself. That card will give fans access to the album and two exclusive bonus tracks, with other surprises to come later.

“I decided early on in the process of making this album that I also wanted to create an environmentally kind, forward-thinking alternative to the CD,” Lorde says. “I wanted this Music Box product to be similar in size, shape, and price to a CD. To live alongside it in a retail environment; but be something which stands apart and that’s committed to the evolving nature of a modern album.”
