She’s 100% That Coog

It’s no secret that Lizzo has a special place in her heart for the city of Houston. Specifically, she holds her alma mater in high regard. After her time at the University of Houston, the pop singer has publicly expressed her love and gratitude for the school in more ways than one. It is this love and dedication to the university that paved the way to the Sasha Be Flooting Scholarship.

At the end of June, Lizzo went on to announce that she is partnering with the University of Houston to create a $50,000 scholarship for Black students studying at the Moores School of Music. This act of kindness is part of her Juneteenth giveback in which the artist is pledging $50,000 scholarships to a multitude of organizations encouraging Black students pursuing musical degrees. The “Sasha Be Flootin: scholarship pays homage to Lizzo’s own time as a member of the Spirit of Houston, the college’s largest spirit organization on campus. Lizzo’s own role was a flutist, which is reflected in the scholarship name. Sasha is a reference to one of the university’s mascot names, Sasha the Cougar. This scholarship will change a student’s life forever. And it’s all thanks to Lizzo’s everlasting kindness and Cougar Pride.

Lizzo’s Time at the University of Houston

Leading up to her announcement, Lizzo posted a teaser on Instagram hinting towards a partnership with UH. The photo displayed a young Lizzo playing the flute for the marching band during her time as a student. Next, she posts a second, more recent photo. The two pictures depict the classic dream come true. From musical aspirations as a young adult to a three-time Grammy winning artist, Lizzo has truly excelled past her wildest dreams. And now she’s trying to make the same dreams happen for somebody else. Here’s the caption she wrote alongside the photos:

‘Meet Baby Lizzo on scholarship at the University of Houston hoping she’ll earn a music performance degree in flute…. Little did she know she’d change the conversation on flutes in pop culture forever.”
