Lady A meets Lady A
Aside from Grammys, Lady A has also won CMA awards, Billboard Music Awards, People’s Choice Awards, and Teen Choice Awards. The band formed back in 2006 in Nashville, Tennessee. They have since become a big name in country music and country pop. Because of this, they also seem to have had their share of entertainment controversies.
Back in 2020, Lady Antebellum changed their name to Lady A due to being accused of romanticizing times in America when slavery was very present. However, long-time blues singer Anita White had been performing under and releasing albums with that same name—Lady A—for over 20 years. White spoke with Rolling Stone about how frustrated she was that the band didn’t come to her first before changing their name. “This is my life. Lady A is my brand, I’ve used it for over 20 years, and I’m proud of what I’ve done,” she said. “It shouldn’t have taken George Floyd to die for them to realize that their name had a slave reference to it.”
The parties have only finally reached an agreement this past January, according to Pitchfork. The terms of this agreement have not been made public. However, both the band and the singer still use the name “Lady A” on places like Spotify.
In an age where the internet is used by everyone and any question can be answered with a few clicks, it isn’t hard to see if someone is performing under a name you want to use. It also isn’t hard to see if the name you want to use professionally has a controversial background or connotation.
