Columbian-American singer, songwriter, and producer Kali Uchis has just released her first album of the year, ‘Red Moon In Venus’.

Artist Profile On Kali Uchis

You may know Uchis for her soulful vocals and combination of English and Spanish in her songwriting. Both of these unique traits are prevalent in ‘Red Moon In Venus,’ showcasing her skills like never before.

Kali Uchis first gained recognition in 2015 with her mixtape, ‘Por Vida‘, which included featured artists like Tyler, The Creator and Kaytranda. Three years later, she released her debut studio album, ‘Isolation‘, which rapidly gained popularity and eventually led to a Grammy nomination for her song, “After the Storm.” This is one of three nominations in her career. Since, she’s gone on to collaborate with other popular artists, from the likes of PARTYNEXTDOOR, to Rico Nasty, to her most recent collabs, like Omar Apollo and Summer Walker.

Breaking Down ‘Red Moon in Venus’

‘Red Moon in Venus’ is Uchis’ third studio album and features 13 tracks, including previously released singles, “Moonlight” and “I Wish you Roses.” Overall, ‘Red Moon in Venus’ showcases Uchis’ versatility as an artist. It incorporates a variety of styles, many of which have become Uchis’ staples: psychedelic alt-pop, R&B, and hip-hop with a Latin twist.

The album begins with a short, 25 second voicemail in “in My Garden…” which sets the scene for the romantic songs to follow. Overall, ‘Red Moon in Venus’ is a sultry, pink bubble bath condensed into 43 minutes of hyper-femme melodies and low-tempo beats. The lyrics may appear soft around the edges, but if you listen closely, they’re more jagged than they appear. Kali Uchis explores love and relationships in ‘Red Moon in Venus’. From lonely nights to tantalizing bedroom adventures, Uchis dives right in and dissects every aspect of love. “Deserve Me” encourages self-love in the midst of a breakup. Likewise, “I Wish you Roses” portrays the balance between loss and love. Throughout ‘Red Moon in Venus,’ you will find that Uchis navigates listeners through the highs and lows of romance.

“Red Moon in Venus is more sultry, more sensual. It’s more based around love, all the different signs and elements of love. Self-love, lost love, trying to call love into your life—it’s basically all the different sides of love.”

-Kali Uchis via an interview with Vogue

‘Red Moon’ is the first album to be released this year. Whereas it is primarily sung in English, the second album to be released this year will be in Spanish. Though the details haven’t been released yet, it appears that we will be seeing plenty of Kali Uchis in 2023. And I, for one, cannot wait to see what she has in store.
