New Year, New Miley: Get into Miley Cyrus’s comeback single, “Flowers,” a soft disco track off her highly-anticipated album, Endless Summer Vacation.
“Flowers” By Miley Cyrus
Yas, give mama her flowers! The 30-year-old pop superstar is hot and angry on her latest single. She professes self-love, resurgence and independence. And if you listen to the lyrics, its parallels, and production inspiration, Cyrus is completely justified.
With stems from Gloria Gaynor’s classic “I Will Survive,” the star seeks revenge in the heathiest way possible, working out, taking a swim and dancing about Liam Hemsworth’s (her ex-husband’s) old rental home where he allegedly cheated on Cyrus 14 times. And the cherry on the top of the revenge plot is its release on his birthday, January 12. Now, that’s a celebration!
Though the track doesn’t necessarily have a “high moment,” there is definitely a silent triumph that rings in the chorus.
“I can buy myself flowers / Write my name in the sand / Talk to myself for hours / Say things you don’t understand / I can take myself dancing /And I can hold my own hand / Yeah, I can love me better than you can”
Fans noticed lyrical similarity between this chorus and Bruno Mars’s “If I Was Your Man,” which Hemsworth once dedicated to Cyrus in 2013. However, this fresh-start track isn’t about finger pointing; “FLOWERS” is about being your own best friend.
What To Expect On Endless Summer Vacation
Each of Cyrus’s album eras are distinctly their own and sonically standalone. In Miley’s words, this is Endless Summer Vacation is a “love letter” to Los Angeles. Therefore expect more of this crisp pop production and 70s disco energy and say goodbye to the glam rock of Plastic Hearts (2020) and country-pop Younger Now (2017.)
On January 5, sunlight and close-up shots invaded Cyrus’s space in a cryptic yet poetic album teaser trailer.
Endless Summer Vacation will be released on Friday, March 10. The singer dares a sexy yet bold album cover by hanging mid-air onto an acrobats’ bar. According to a press release, the stunt was fully executed by Cyrus for the cover without using any visual effects.
