On day one of the three-day festival, Hinterland brought the heat—in more than one way. From Hozier to Orville Peck, the stacked lineup drew quite the crowd to start off the fest.

For the tenth anniversary of Hinterland, perhaps the best lineup yet brought the largest crowd in the festival’s history to Saint Charles, Iowa. Debbii Dawson greeted attendees as soon as they entered on Day One, running to the barricade to camp out for that night’s headliner, Hozier.

Hinterland 2024

Hinterland Day One: Recap

Hinterland is a nice change of pace for festival-goers who are used to upbeat, boisterous music packed to the brim on lineups. Debbii Dawson was a testament that sometimes, it’s nice to start your day off slower before ramping up in the evening. Her set was short and sweet; the same could be said of Odie Leigh. Though they were playing to a relatively empty venue during the peak of the heat, both Debbii and Odie did a great job of making the most of the situation and entertaining the few who were in attendance.

Things didn’t really ramp up until Josiah and the Bonnevilles took to the stage. From act three on, the excitement officially began. Josiah’s energy on stage was instantly infectious, introducing himself and explaining that we, the fans, are the Bonnevilles in his name. He got fans up on their feet and moving throughout his set. And most were sad to see him go after a short 45 minutes.

Other notable moments included Hippo Campus’ hit songs, like “Suicide Saturday” and “Buttercup.” For a band that’s been around for 10+ years, Hippo Campus is a compelling act with a wide discography that is sure to appeal to any music lover. They’re comfortable on the stage, and they’ve got great music. What’s not to love?

Hozier is easily one of the best vocalists of this generation. He puts on exceptional shows, with a clear display of vocal prowess that comes unrivaled to most. He’s charming and funny and can captivate anyone you put before him. Playing tracks like “From Eden,” to “Abstract,” to his newest, unreleased “Nobody’s Soldier,” fans were ecstatic to see the man that they’d waited all day for. For an hour and a half, Hinterland stood entranced, hanging on to Hozier’s every word. He played hit after hit and utilized his platform to advocate for social issues he held close to his heart. Needless to say, Hozier was the perfect headliner to start off year 10 of Hinterland.
