Why The Current Tinashe Moment Is Still So Well-Deserved

"Nasty" and its follow-up, "Getting No Sleep," have brought Tinashe her biggest pop cultural moment in years.
A promotional still for ‘Part II: Quantum Baby’

The Tinashe Moment is still ongoing, and it’ll only be getting bigger and better. Later this fall, she’ll be heading off on the North American leg of her Match My Freak world tour. On October 14, 2024, she’ll kick things off in Anaheim, CA, before stints in Texas, Canada and more. So far, her dates end on November 25 back in California in Sacramento. For all the tour dates and ticket info, check her website.

Tinashe has taken over timelines and airwaves with one of her 2024 singles, “Nasty.” We’ve touched upon the massive track on a few choice occasions (including in video), so we’ll eschew a full breakdown of the now inescapable song. Instead, as we await further details on the project it will appear on, it feels like an opportune chance for reflection. Here’s everything you need to know about the follow-up Tinashe single, “Getting No Sleep,” and why we’re celebrating the moment “Nasty” has spawned.

How The Latest Tinashe Singles, “Nasty” & “Getting No Sleep” Stack Up

Concluding on the sound for this “era” would obviously be extrapolating off of incomplete data, but with Tinashe herself tipping off a theme of continuation on Part II: Quantum Baby, the two singles so far compare well to what was on that 2023 EP. “Nasty” is almost a grimier version of “Needs,” a track that similarly foregrounded raw, fiery energy over booming production.

“Getting No Sleep,” on the other hand, is compositionally more similar to a lowkey Tinashe cut like “Tightrope” or “Gravity,” maintaining those themes while transitioning to a more mellow, drum and bass-tinged lane. It almost goes without saying given that we ranked the original BB/ANG3L as one of our best albums of 2024, but the early returns for this project are super encouraging, and the multi-hyphenate seems poised for another “best of” type effort.

A Moment Earned Without Compromise

It’s especially refreshing this moment comes spotlighting a sound so uniquely hers. Some of the similarly charting earlier work had clear label influence (read: a tad on the formulaic side). Often it meant pinning her R&B talents in a crossover lane next to the likes of Schoolboy Q, Future or, infamously, Chris Brown.

Her output in the time since hasn’t dovetailed as well into Billboard success, but it’s been incredible all the same, and nabbing her biggest commercial and cultural hit without compromise feels like a win for her, her camp, and the fans who knew this was possible the whole way through.

Part II: Quantum Baby is expected to land on August 16th. In the meantime, you can find “Nasty,” “Getting No Sleep” and all of the Tinashe backlog wherever you stream your music.
