Call Me Cruella
Florence + the Machine, the English indie rock band, has released a new original song for Disney’s Cruella movie. The song, titled “Call Me Cruella”, is the featured music for the movie’s sneak peek trailer.
“Call Me Cruella” is a collaboration between Florence + the Machine and composer Nicolas Britell. Britell did the original score for Academy Award-winning Moonlight. He also composed the theme song for the Emmy Award-winning television show Succession. It is a powerhouse collab, to say the least.
The lyrics speak to the legendary Disney villain’s cruel ways. The music channels the rock-and-roll era of ’60s and ’70s London, in which the film is set. Combined, it tells the story of the new movie’s unconventional protagonist.
This is not the band’s first foray into soundtrack work. The band has provided songs for movies such as The Death & Life of John F. Donovan and video games such as Final Fantasy XV.
The Women behind Florence + The Machine
Florence + the Machine has dominated indie rock since their debut album Lungs released in 2009. Since then, their status as modern-day music icons continues to build.
The band is helmed by Florence Welch, a certifiable rock goddess ala Kate Bush, and virtuoso keyboardist Isabella Summers. The full band also consists of guitarist Rob Ackroyd and harpist Tom Monger. Usually, there’s a collaboration of other musicians, such as a small backing orchestra and choir singers.
The band has never won a Grammy Award. As for NME Awards, they’ve collected a total of three. BRIT Awards pickings are even slimmer, with only two. But award shows do not do this band justice. They are celebrated worldwide as a reminder that good rock and roll is still being made. Of course, the band’s frontwoman Welch is a major part of the celebrations. Her style is as bewitching as Stevie Nicks’ and her voice is as powerful as Björk’s. She has collaborated with dozens of music industry icons, old and new. This list includes the likes of Drake, Elton John, Josh Homme, Jennifer Hudson, Christina Aguilera, Dizzee Rascal, and the Rolling Stones. And of course, she is beloved by her fans.
