With the upcoming release of the fictional biopic “ELVIS,” the least anyone was expecting was a track by Doja Cat. Elvis was know as the King of Rock, a rap track is a bit random to say the least. Welp, it’s here so I might as well give you my two cents on it.
Lyrics:
“Vegas” goes into that top dog energy. Lyrically, Doja goes ahead and exudes the energy of a bad bitch. Sure, that isn’t very special in today’s age with artists like Megan Thee Stallion making her career off of that. However, in this case, the energy and vibe that kind of music gives off fits a project associated with Elvis Presley. Thematically I can see how certain lyrics connect with the King of Rock. As for the specific lines, we’ll have to see how the film goes and how they connect beyond flare and energy.
Beats:
Interestingly this track samples the original “Hound Dog” by Big Mama Thornton. While an interesting choice, considering that it’s for a biopic piece having that sample connects to the story. I for one actually appreciate that touch and how it gels with the beat. Speaking of beats, the production feels like it was made perfectly in tandem with Doja’s flow.
Individuality (or Lack Thereof):
Sadly, this doesn’t feel like something special like the soundtrack for Black Panther. While containing various artists, the OST was executively produced by legend Kendrick Lamar. This resulted in the album feeling consistent and tonally equivalent to the film and its world. For ELVIS, I expect that the album is more reminiscent of the music he made or something inspired by it. This isn’t that.
All in all, independently the track could fit perfectly within Doja’s own library of tunes. As for a song meant for a biopic on the King of ROCK, no not really. You could have some fun with it, but it’s more corporate hatching than labor of love.
