Britney Spears drops a new collaboration, “MIND YOUR BUSINESS,” a reworked archive track from producer Will.i.am. This release comes fresh off the announcement of Spears’s long-awaited memoir, The Woman In Me, out October 24, 2023. Simon & Schuster’s showcase site describes the memoir as a “brave and astonishingly moving story about freedom, fame, motherhood, survival, faith, and hope.”
Everything the Princess of Pop touches turns to gold. Following the highly-publicized #FreeBritney movement and dissolvement of her ten-plus year conservatorship, she quietly released the ultra-successful dance record with Elton John, “Hold Me Closer,” which peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100.
However, “MIND YOUR BUSINESS” follows the cookie crumbs of the duo’s 2013 club banger “Scream & Shout.” Producer will.i.am released a statement discussing the song’s origin and misconceptions. “When did I record it [“Mind Your Business'”]? That’s not important,” said Will.i.am. “For example, I have a track from several records ago, “Girl Like Me.” I wrote and produced it for Shakira in 2008, but it came out in 2021. That’s a lot of fermenting. Not everything should be instant.”
“Every single person, famous and not, has their privacy invaded in some shape or form in this digital age. It’s a sentiment for the times, so we should be more humane to each other, respect and have empathy for each other, and be thankful for what people choose to share publicly.”
Will.i.am tells Vogue
He’s exactly right: “MIND YOUR BUSINESS” is Spears’s greatest flip-off as a recently freed woman whose constantly criticized. It is incredibly repetitive and never delirious, with the legendary performer baring her teeth and middle finger. Will.i.am delivers a sparse club hit sprinkled with rich electronic elements that build throughout the track.
Despite its early-2010s timestamp, will.i.am and Spears livened the track with heavy bass and hip-hop. According to the legend herself, Spears tells Vogue that her new single is “Fun, campy, and edgy– a perfect song for the summer.”
The moral of the story is to “Mind Your B!”
