Ben Platt Expresses Feeling “Happy To Be Sad”

Actor and singer-songwriter released his latest track “Happy To Be Sad” and announced that his sophomore album Reverie will be out in August.

Reverie Arrives on August 13!

Following up to “Imagine,” “Happy To Be Sad” arrives as the second single off Platt’s upcoming album. Reverie will be out for the world to enjoy in August. “I am over the moon excited to announce that my second album Reverie is out August 13th!” Platt announced on his Instagram account. “We all hate hyperbole, but this record is honestly my favorite thing of any kind that I’ve ever made. I’ve been dying to share it with all of you.”

“Happy To Be Sad” is a heartbreaking but empowering uplifting ballad. In it, Platt shares the feeling of when first parting ways with that special person, not permanently but because that’s how the circumstances are. “This time there’s no broken hearts. And no one ran ’cause it got hard. This missing you is temporary pain. I’m happy to be sad. I’m sad that you are gone. If I was feeling nothing I would feel like something’s wrong,” he sings.

“Happy To Be Sad” is About Long-Term Relationships

“I wrote this song the day after my boyfriend left me for a 5-month stretch,” Platt says. “It was the first time we had to be apart long term because of the pandemic. It came incredibly naturally and was an immediate expression of the mixed emotions I was feeling that day- the sadness to be away from him against the joy and celebration of finding someone I love enough to make me feel that way.”

The song was produced by Michael Pollack (Justin Bieber, Katy Perry) and Zach Skelton (Jonas Brothers, Paul McCartney) with additional production from GRAMMY® Award nominee Gian Stone (Maroon 5, Dua Lipa).

Be on the lookout for Ben Platt’s new album Reverie on August 13 and enjoy “Happy To Be Sad” out now!
