Where It All Started

American alt rock band Young the Giant has dropped their newest single in four years—“Wake Up.” The song is the first single from the band’s latest album, American Bollywood. Fans are incredibly excited about Young the Giant’s return. This album release follows the band’s 2018 release, Mirror Master.

Young the Giant, formerly known as The Jakes, originated in California in 2004. When they first began making music together, several of the bandmates were in college, and two members were still in high school. With all of them attending different schools with different schedules, initial band coordination was difficult. However, The Jakes were able to pull it off. They created their first EP, Shake My Hand, with music producer Ian Kirkpatrick.

After their success thus far, the bandmates all wanted to decide whether or not they continued to pursue music or school. While several members stayed, some did not. Busy people left the band, and new people joined. In 2009, the band changed their name to the one listeners know today: Young the Giant.

Young the Giant quickly saw success after signing with Roadrunner Records in 2009. They released their eponymous debut album in 2010, and their first three singles—“My Body,” “Cough Syrup” and “Apartment”—soon became alternative hits.

Young the Giant’s “Wake Up” and What Comes Next

“Wake Up” opens with traditional Indian instruments and music. Soon, though, the electric guitars and drums kick in to give listeners that alt rock sound that seems specifically unique to Young the Giant. The lyrics detail dreams about reincarnation, nirvana, and waking up to life.

According to the band’s Instagram, “Wake Up” is about “a fever dream from the poet Vyasa of past lives and visions, the journey of this band and all of our collective identity over the last four years, and the prologue to our fifth studio album: American Bollywood.”

In that same post, the band said that American Bollywood will be told in four parts: “Origins, Exile, Battle & Denouement.” Fans are on the edges of their seats to see how Young the Giant describes their identity and journey through music with these four acts. American Bollywood: Origins was just released on July 15th.

In addition to their new era of music, the band will be going on tour from October 12th to November 12th. Check out the venues, tickets, and more here.
