Who Are This Year’s Contenders for the Best Music Film?

With the history of the Best Music Film Grammy Award, the winner for the 2023 music season will no doubt be a surprise. Given how competitive the category is, at least two films out of the 94 being considered for a Grammy nomination are on the Oscars shortlist. At least twenty acts that are contenders for Album of the Year are also contenders. This is due to their direct tie-ins with their album counterparts. As this is not official, the numbers can seen as a record in itself for another historic year in music filmmaking.

Best Music Film Grammy Contenders

The list of contenders, albums and films as per Billboard, are as follows:

Boygenius’ The Film linked to previous film The Record

Miley Cyrus’ Endless Summer Vacation (Backyard Sessions) — linked with her album of the same name

Kelsea Ballerini’s Rolling Up the Welcome Mat (A Short Film)

Duran, Duran’s A Hollywood High past winner from the 1984 film of the same name

U2’s Bono and The Edge: A Sort of Homecoming With David Letterman won in 1995 for their film Zoo TV: Live From Sydney

Foo Fighters’ Preparing Music for Concerts won in 2012 for their film Back & Forth

Summer of Soul

Jazz Fest: A New Orleans Story

San Francisco Sounds: A Place in Time

Meet Me in The Bathroom

If These Walls Could Sing

Ladies First: A Story of Women in Hip-Hop

Mixtape

As most of these films are live recordings, there are too many to make a complete list of each film. The film that made the list stand out the most is Milli Vanilli. The film tells the story of how the duo of Fav Morvan and Rob Pilatus had their Grammy revoked because of their phony smash album.

Given this list’s depth, music fans will have to wait and see who comes out on top in 2024.

Be sure to check out the Grammy nominations this Friday, November 10, at 7:45 AM PT / 10:45 AM ET on live.GRAMMY.com.
