The Beastie Boys are finally having a New York City corner named after them.
Beastie Boys Square
It was recently announced that the Beastie Boys will be having a New York City square named in their honor. Fans of the three-man hip hop group are all saying, “it’s about time.” This particular square holds a special place in fans’ hearts. It was the cover of Paul’s Boutique, the group’s second album from 1989.
According to Entertainment’s Justine Browning, for almost a decade, fans of the Beastie Boys have been vying for the Lower East Side corner at the Ludlow and Rivington streets to be renamed “Beastie Boys Square.” At long last, the New York City Council has approved the honorable dedication.
Hip Hop Game Changers
The Beastie Boys are best known for their biggest hits. “Fight For Your Right,” “No Sleep Till Brooklyn” and “Sabotage” are some of the boys’ most popular songs, and two out of three of them are from their debut album, Licensed to Ill. Though Paul’s Boutique didn’t receive the same accolades that Licensed to Ill received, fans still loved and appreciated their lyricism and experimentation on the second album.
New York City Council Member Christopher Marte released a statement to local news channel PIX 11 once the name change was officially approved. Marte said, “As many of us know, once the Beastie Boys hit the scene, it really changed the hip-hop game.” He sees the square name change as “a celebration for the Lower East Side, a celebration for hip-hop and especially a celebration for our community who has been organizing for a really long time to make this happen.”
