The Amazons is an English alternative rock band formed in Reading, Berkshire in 2014. Vocalist Matt Thomson, guitarist Chris Alderton, and bassist Elliot Briggs were already in a group together. When they met drummer Josef “Joe” Emmet, the quartet was complete.
What characterizes The Amazons’ sound is catchy melodies, melodic and unforgettable riffs. The alternating of melodic choruses to the Thomson lead singing high-pitched voice creates goosebump inducing melodic lines. These play against powerful guitars and a very strong bass. The contrast between these different currents creates a very particular, interesting and singular sound, characteristic of the band. The band mixes the power of 90’s grunge with the melody of the indie scene. The Amazons also includes some references to Fall Out Boy and Royal Blood. For the latter, the band also opened multiple concerts, as well as for Greta Van Fleet and The Darkness.
Both Mother and Doubt It, both from their 2019 album, are songs that perfectly represents The Amazons’ style with their strong and rhythmic drum introductions and guitars. In My Mind and Black Magic also describe well the band’s modus operandi, coupling instrumental parts that tend to rock with melodic and pop choirs and vocal lines.
The band’s debut album “The Amazons” reached number 8 in the UK album charts in 2017. Moreover, NME, The Independent and BBC Radio 1 named them a “band to listen to in 2017.”
Since their formation, the band released three albums. In 2017, The Amazons released their debut self-titled album. “Future Dust” followed in 2019, with hits like Doubt It and Georgia. In September 2022, the band is set to release a new record, “How Will I Know If Heaven Will Find Me?”
Since the release of their first singles in 2016, the band also received multiple nominations. MTV nominated the quartet as Brand New for 2017, while BBC for Sound of 2017. In 2017, The Telegraph included the band’s album “The Amazons” in The Best Albums of the Year chart.
“How Will I Know” album and New Single “One by One”
On July 21, one of the first extracts of the The Amazons’ third album came out. How Will I Know is a single that, despite the presence of the usual lively rhythm, tends to indie more than the previous albums did. As well as Ready For Something and Bloodrush, the most recent singles released this year. Now “One by One” has been released and is likely to be part of the upcoming new album How Will I Know If Heaven Will Find Me? That song is less aggressive than singles like Mother.
During live concerts, the band has also performed a new single that, according to their words, will come out soon. The single is called One By One, and is a socio-political themed ballad. Introduced by Tomson’s voice accompanied only by a light guitar, the song is very strong.
The Amazons are about to begin their UK tour, after which they’ll move to the US for four nights only. Make sure to find your tickets here to see this fast growing band live!
