‘De Una Vez’ is Her First Spanish Song in a While
Selena Gomez just dropped her highly anticipated Spanish single ‘De Una Vez.’ The single is the first Spanish song she has dropped in almost 10 years, with the previous ones being ‘Un Año Sin Lluvia’ and ‘Dices.’
On Instagram, she connected with her Spanish-speaking fans by announcing: “De Una Vez disponible ya. Este es el comienzo de algo que durante mucho tiempo había querido explorar. Espero que te guste tanto como a mí. // De Una Vez is out now. This is the beginning of something I’ve wanted to explore for so long. I hope you love it as much as I do.”
Selena also shared “This has been something I’ve wanted to do for 10 years, working on a Spanish project, because I’m so, so proud of my heritage, and just genuinely felt like I wanted this to happen,” she said. “And it happened, and I feel like it’s the perfect timing. Just with all the division in the world, there’s something about Latin music. It globally just makes people feel things, you know?” “What’s funny, is I actually think I sing better in Spanish,”
She continued, “That was something I discovered. It was a lot of work, and look, you cannot mispronounce anything. It is something that needed to be precise, and needed to be respected by the audience I’m going to release this for. Of course I want everyone to enjoy the music, but I am targeting my fan base. I’m targeting my heritage, and I couldn’t be more excited… I just hope that people understand how much I put my heart into this, and how amazing I feel about it.”
Selena Resembles Frida Kahlo in the Video!
But the song is not the only thing that carries significance for Selena. Throughout the nearly 3-minute music video, the former Disney Channel star wears a floral pink Rodarte dress with puffed sleeves. In fact, the frock pretty much serves as the focal point throughout the entire video. According to Verduzco, the flowery print is a nod to the iconic Mexican painter Frida Kahlo. Meanwhile, Gomez’s standout jewelry was created by the talented Mexican jewelry designer Daniela Villegas.
“We wanted to have these connections, to create this look, and to play with the amazing flowers the way Frida did, but making it modern and cool for right now,” Verduzco told Vogue. “The flowers on the dress, hair, and within the video all connect with this idea of renewal.” For Selena, though, it was all about paying homage to the ideas of rebirth and growth. “I love the role nature plays in the video as well and how it represents healing and growth.”
