The king of the teased album and prolonged release cycle, Playboi Carti just dropped a new single, “All Red.” The track is first release on streaming platforms in nearly three years. It arrives alongside the most serious indications that his long-anticipated I Am Music is now around the corner. Here’s everything you need to know about “All Red” and what Playboi Carti promises for this next era.

“All Red” Holds Playboi Carti Fans Over As Long-Awaited Album Looms

Very much a student of the Young Thug school, Carti’s output mid and post “Whole Lotta Red” has seen the Atlanta native add new voices and intonations to his register with real frequency. He debuted the falsetto “baby voice” around the time of his and Drake’s “Pain 1996.” Then, he adopted a James Earl Jones baritone for the smash “FEIN.” And, now, is seemingly paying homage to fellow Georgia legend future with this latest delivery.

Outside of that new development, this isn’t a revolutionary single by any means. Frequent collaborator F1LTHY provides his trademark brand of ominous trap, and Carti subsequently relies on heavy repetition and melody for much of the appeal with “All Red.” More than anything, the Pluto-esque cadence is noteworthy for shifting Carti back into the fabric of mainstream hip-hop, a stark break from the solitary position he carved out in this latest era as the head of 0PIUM.

Finally, to sum up why “All Red” seems like an indication that the next Playboi Carti album is on the way, the Atlanta MC posted new merch and a potential release date, with each of his associated accounts reposting as if to underline the significance. Long-time fans know that for this project, teased and promised on and off for four years now, there’s no such thing as a sure thing, but it seems fair to get your hopes up at this juncture.

You can catch “All Red” and all of the Playboi Carti backlog wherever you stream your music.
