“Out of Time” Adds to The Weeknd’s Dawn FM Narrative

The Important Lore:

The Weeknd is a powerhouse with previous work, After Hours. Debuting at Number 1 on US Billboard 200, it’s safe to say that people were excited for his next project. On January 7th, 2022, Dawn FM came out to Number 2 on the same chart. The intrigue remains; Dawn FM takes you on a psychological journey of acceptance through the guise of a radio show. With that, another piece of the puzzle just got life with the release of the music video: “Out of Time.”

The Video:

Opening with an eerie establishing shot of the Hotel where The Weeknd resides. We then go on to see him getting ready for a night of Karaoke… alone. This isn’t a sad note, it’s a scary one. The only company he has is a woman played by model: Hoyeon.

The two drink together, eat, and sing. The vibe is all but fine. The isolating fact that it’s simply these two in such a large and empty space reeks of bad times. Confirmed when someone comes out of what can only be a surgery room onto the Karaoke room with them. After that there’s very quick flashes of unsettling images and what can only be an older, potentially deformed Weeknd. Spliced in between the scenes he attempts to get closer to his younger self, hitting his reflection in the process.

We then pick up where we left off with the music coming back in. Until… The Weeknd finds the little light in the distance. He’s entranced as what I can only assume is the older him, finally reaches him. That is… before the white light covers the whole screen and we’re in the surgery room. Jim Carrey, who plays the announcer for the album, is there. He picks up a plastic mask; a caricature of our singer.

I don’t have a concrete answer for that. It’s safe to say that we have a piece to the puzzle and soon we’ll have our questions answered. Make sure to check out the video above or here, if you haven’t already.

That’s it for now. For more on your favorites and unknown check out our Word and Drops sections. And remember, tune in to 103.5 Dawn FM.
