Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You” Supremacy

Initially, making Christmas music was a signal that your career was over. So when Mariah Carey released a whole Christmas album in 1994, some heads turned. Now in today’s industry, Christmas songs are a standard in every artist catalog; many artists try to achieve the same success of “All I Want For Christmas Is You”. However, it is seemingly impossible. From powerhouse vocals to lyrics, every aspect contributed to its successful longevity. Part of its fortune comes from Mariah’s true joy of Christmas festivities. “The thing is, I always wanted Christmas to be perfect… and then I have this incredibly dysfunctional family that would ruin it every year,” Carey tells Amazon Music

Just last year, Mariah Carey broke Spotify’s single-day streaming record with 17.5 million streams with “All I Want For Christmas Is You”. Now, the modern-day classic amassed over 1 billion streams, respectfully. This week, according to Billboard, the carol “makes an unprecedented return to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart.” It is also the first song in the chart’s history to have led in three distinct runs on the ranking (’19, ’20, ’21).

Not only that, but at the beginning of December, the Christmas classic received the RIAA Diamond award. To obtain the award, an artist must earn ten-million sales and streams. It also marks another milestone, making it the first holiday song to receive this award. Mariah Carey has now received this award three times as 1993’s Music Box and 1995’s Daydream are also diamond-certified.

To further promote her reign as “Queen As Christmas,” she returns with another Apple TV+ special. Along with 2020’s “Mariah Carey’s Magical Christmas Special,” now there’s “Mariah’s Christmas: The Magic Continues”. Mariah remade her Christmas original “Oh Santa!” with Ariana Grande and Jennifer Hudson to promote last year’s special. For the 2021 special from Apple TV+, Mariah Carey released the sultry and sweet “Fall in Love at Christmas” featuring Khalid and Kirk Franklin. Mariah Carey has many talents, but her ability to make and share Christmas joy that touches everyone is unmatched. “All I Want For Christmas Is You” is an example of such resilience and longevity.
