MD Disc: Madison Cunningham

Madison Cunningham recently earned her third-ever GRAMMY nomination, but the young up-and-coming artist already has a GRAMMY. Read on to learn more about the rising singer-songwriter.

If you’re not familiar with her work, you’re missing out. Check out one of her private performances for Red Rocks, just released this past November, below.

Madison Cunningham’s GRAMMY History

Cunningham spoke with Guitar.com back in 2020 when she earned her first GRAMMY nomination after releasing her debut album.

“It was completely unexpected! A lot of people had been stressing to me, ‘Your debut record on a major label is a big statement, it’s your first impression, and you have to figure out what you want that to be’. And I think I put a lot of pressure on myself to figure that out. I was more like, ‘I’ve really got to dig deeper and figure out what the heck actually want to say with my songwriting voice’. Because that’s a big deal.”

“It was completely unexpected!” Cunningham said. “A lot of people had been stressing to me, ‘Your debut record on a major label is a big statement, it’s your first impression, and you have to figure out what you want that to be’. And I think I put a lot of pressure on myself to figure that out. I was more like, ‘I’ve really got to dig deeper and figure out what the heck actually want to say with my songwriting voice’. Because that’s a big deal.”

The songstress added, “I think in some ways, all the pressure that I had felt up into the moment of releasing the record… the Grammy nomination maybe served as alleviation of that. I was like, ‘Oh, what we did and what we worked for was a good thing!’. That’s not to say that the Grammys are the final word on what’s good and what’s not, but it changed things in the sense that I didn’t think that the Academy would notice a record like this.”

In total, Cunningham has earned the following GRAMMY nominations.

  • Best Americana Album, Who Are You Now
  • Best Folk Album, Wednesday (Extended Edition)
  • Best American Roots Performance, Life According To Raechel
  • Best Folk Album, Revealer (Won)
  • Best American Roots Performance, Inventing The Wheel

Later this year, Madison Cunningham is going on tour beginning in March. She’s supporting John Mayer, The Head and the Heart and other major acts. Tickets are available via her official website.
