A self-proclaimed “alt-soul” maestro, singer Leonelle charges ahead following last year’s release of her biggest track yet, “Human Condition.” Additionally serving as the next steps following her standout EP during the same period, F**kin’ Weird, “for me (say my name),” arrives as anticipation grows for a more full-length effort down the stretch. Here’s everything you need to know about Leonelle and her latest drop, “for me.”

Leonelle Boldly Spins Destiny Child For The Captivating “for me”

To be sure, relying heavily on a sample is a big gambit. Though we see this sort of swing pay off in the work of artists like Bebe Rexha, Ava Max and Dua Lipa, there’s always the risk of falling short of the sheer immensity of the track you’re referencing. Luckily, Leonelle’s take doesn’t fall into that category.

For one, the song simply doesn’t rely on the old standard as aforementioned pieces do. Beyonce’s iconic lyrics get a true reinterpretation, delivered with different emotions and melodic qualities entirely. It allows Leonelle’s version to stand on its own without needing to rely on any previous goodwill. Additionally, lightly trap-inspired production carries underneath. The verse sections see Leonelle’s voice and songwriting capabilities shine through. A smattering of inventive melodic sections and some raw transparent lyrics further establish this. “I’m so damn broken and you don’t give a f***.”

The vocal quality that Leonelle continues to bring to the table at one carries the quality of old-school R&B standouts and remains extremely current all the same. While further details about a potential debut record on the horizon haven’t emerged just yet, there’s a ton to look forward to in what she’s released so far.
