Programming With a Purpose

Importantly, the programming serves to celebrate Black culture and educate viewers on the historical date.  A team of Black creators at Live Nation Urban in conjunction with Jesse Collins Entertainment will produce the event.  Live Nation Urban president Shawn Gee says, “This is the most important event we’ve ever produced at Live Nation Urban.”  Explaining the importance, he says it is “a moment to celebrate and reflect on black independence and the black experience. It’s also a moment to raise awareness and shine light on the miles we still need to travel to true equity.”  SVP and Chief Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer for CNN Worldwide, Johnita P. Due, carries that sentiment further.  Moreover, she says, “Through musical performances and thoughtful storytelling we will embody the excellence and resilience of the Black community.”

An Array of Artists Join The Show

Altogether, the show features an array of artists, musicians, and activists.  Yolanda Adams, Anthony Hamilton, Billy Porter,  Earth Wind & Fire, Jhené Aiko, and Michelle Williams, are all performers for the show.  CNN Worldwide chairman and CEO, Chris Licht said of the event, “I’m thrilled that CNN is broadcasting this historic event for our viewers across the globe to celebrate and understand the significance of Juneteenth.” Additionally, Mickey Guyton, Robert Glasper, Debbie Allen Dance Academy, Killer Mike, Lucky Daye, Mary Mary, and The Roots are all set to perform.

Also, The Re-Collective Orchestra will perform during the broadcasting.  The 68-member all-Black symphony orchestra, will perform at the Hollywood Bowl.  The act commemorates the venues 100th anniversary.  Further, this marks the first time an all-Black orchestra will play there.
