New Music Coming Next Year
Interpol are currently in the studio in London recording their follow-up to 2018’s Marauder with producers Flood and Alan Moulder. Flood and Moulder are acclaimed and prolific producers, working with bands like The Killers, Depeche Mode, and Nine Inch Nails. Earlier this summer, the band shared on Instagram that they had been working on new music remotely for the past year. The post writes, “Fortunately, in recent months, we’ve had the opportunity to get together in person and continue to develop those ideas the old-fashion way: loud and in the flesh.” The band’s new record is expected to arrive next year on Matador Records. Interpol also announced a run of tour dates for the Spring of 2022.
Interpol’s Legend Status
Interpol had a heavy hand in crafting the indie rock sound of the 2000s and were pioneers of the New York City indie scene. Until bands like Interpol emerged, alternative rock was dominated by nu-metal. The group’s most revered album, 2002’s Turn on the Bright Lights, was a smash hit back then and has stood the test of time, now considered an indie classic. The post-punk style is dark and rhythmic, likening themselves to icons like Joy Division. The melancholy and lush sounds are broken up by catchy guitar riffs and hammering drums.
Plenty of Side Projects
Although Interpol hasn’t released music in a while, frontman Paul Banks has been busy. After the band’s last full-length release, Banks teamed up with Josh Kaufman and Matt Barrick to form the band, Muzz. The group delivered their self-titled record last June. Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA also teased that the duo’s project Banks & Steelz picked up again during the pandemic. The two have been sending tracks back and forth, but no dates for an official release have been announced.
