Halsey took over to Instagram to announce the title of her fourth studio album, If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power.
Halsey’s Clever Announcement
In a ten-second clip shared to the artist’s Instagram and Twitter feeds, a billboard in Los Angeles is visible; featuring the album title and Reznor and Ross’s names, along with the subtitle, “The FOURTH album by Halsey.” A brief snippet of unnamed music can be heard, alluding to a heavier sound from the artist. The new album, titled If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power, has not been given a release date.
Halsey’s album announcement comes about a year and a half after they released Manic, which went Platinum in the United States. Earlier this year, the “You Should Be Sad” singer canceled the album’s accompanying tour; citing the “health and safety” of their fans amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Will If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power Be a Rock Album?
The Manic follow-up is produced by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross of Nine Inch Nails. Reznor’s last major album production for an outside artist came back in 2007 when he produced Saul Williams’ The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of NiggyTardust! Famously, he is also credited as a producer on “Old Town Road,” as the song samples a Nine Inch Nails track.
The collaboration is Reznor and Ross’s first project since their win for Best Original Score at this year’s Academy Awards, for their work with Jon Batiste on Pixar’s Soul. Reznor and Ross have collaborated on a number of film scores together. These include the Academy Award-winning The Social Network, and 2020’s Mank; for which they were nominated for Best Original Score against themselves.
Last November, Halsey expressed her desire to release a full-fledged rock album sooner than later. “I do really want to, but it needs to come naturally,” she explained to Vogue. “I’ve never sat down before and been like, ‘Okay, I want to make this type of album’. The album kind of makes itself. When that time comes, it’ll happen on its own. I definitely need to do it eventually though, because I’m starting to age out of being angsty and punk.”
