The singer-actor Hailee Steinfeld returns to music with her first single since 2020, the easy-breezy “Coast” featuring Anderson .Paak.
What Did Hailee Do During Her Music Break?
Since her last single, “Masterpiece,” with Chen Linong, the 25-year-old”s schedule did not slow down. From covering major magazines like Cosmopolitan and Wonderland to being the face of advertisements like Core Hydration, her disappearance from music didn’t translate to laziness.
Instead, she focused on her acting career. The mega-success of “Hawkeye” (2021) on Disney+ made Steinfeld no stranger to the red carpet as she played Kate Bishop alongside MCU alum Jeremy Renner. She voiced Vi, one of the main characters from League of Legends’s “Arcane” series on Netflix. But, Steinfeld finally got to have the lead role also on Apple TV’s “Dickinson” (2019-2021), starring as the young poet Emily Dickinson.
This October, she will reprise her role as Gwen Stacy in the second installment of Rodney Rothman’s Spider-Man titled “Spider-Man: Across the SpiderVerse.” Here’s a first look!
Since her recent project is already in post-production, this could be used as some downtime for the star. However, Steinfeld quickly bounced back and returned to music with the new single “Coast” with American rapper Anderson .Paak (who recently collaborated with Vans for a new clothing campaign.)
“Coast” by Hailee Steinfeld featuring Anderson .Paak
“You’re the wave upon the ocean / Poundin’ rhythm and motion,” Hailee opens with upbeat guitar and lush synths.
Before the release of “Coast,” she discussed her two-year comeback on Twitter: “If you’ve been with me for a while you know this has been a long time coming. If you’re new here… I’m about to release my first song in over a year with one of my favorite artists/someone I’m lucky to call a friend.”
Anderson .Paak does not disappoint and brings the energy with a playful back-and-forth with Steinfeld. He raps about being in love and swept up in that feeling like a wave.
In particular, the rapper gravitates towards Steinfeld’s success and beauty. He raps, “Parties in LA feel like holidays / Hit the PCH and we on our way / To a place I was born and raised / You live on the screen and the stage / I wanna fit in between your legs.”
The chorus is both chill and high-energy because the artists are in sync with each other. It creates a wonderful light atmosphere. They sing, “Baby, all I wanna do is coast / With you / Energy, the body flows (We could cruise if the mood’s right) / (Catch a wave in the moonlight.)” This easy-breezy song is perfect for letting your hair down or “coasting” down the highway. Why not both?
