Coming out of Portland by way of Maine, Genevieve Stokes already has claim to a laundry list of achievements that up-and-comers across the country would kill for. Opening up for the likes of Sarah Kinsley, the 23-year-old amassed heaps of streams on her first major label project, Swimming Lessons. Now poised for an earnest full-length effort, Genevieve Stokes let’s lean into her lead single, “Dreamer.” Here’s everything you need to know about why we find “Dreamer” so compelling before Genevieve starts her tour this week. Not to mention an album, With A Lightning Strike as well!

“Dreamer” Launches Genevieve Stokes’ Solo Album Cycle In Style

Cue “Dreamer,” the idyllic lead single for Stokes’ upcoming debut album. During the verse sections, intricately layered vocals land on top of hard-hitting piano chords and emotional acoustic production. In an age where lucidity & transparency are embraced more than ever (Chappell Roan & Phoebe Bridgers come to mind), the honesty displayed in the lyrics speaks volumes to why we think Genevieve Stokes is on the cusp of greatness.

“He wasn’t a dreamer / No, nothing that he wanted to do,” she cries out on the chorus, reflective on the fact that the partner she sings about wasn’t aspiring towards anything in particular, but they captured her in this moment all the same. The ending climax of this song should be enough to convince you that the 23-year-old should already be on your radar, an almost-cacophonic explosion of scattered electric guitars and overlapping vocal sections.

Heavyweight Co-Signs Speak To Stokes’ Rising Talent

Speaking of Phoebe Bridgers, her name comes in Stokes’ recent catalog, at least indirectly. The production credits on her latest EP, Catching Rabbits, include a connection to both Paul McCartney and the boygenius frontwoman, an indication that we’re not the only ones paying acute attention to her career.

With A Lightning Strike, the aforementioned Genevieve Stokes debut LP and where “Dreamer” comes from, launched on October 4. She’ll be launching a 12-date headline tour across the US in support of that project upon arrival, starting today at the DC9 Club in Washington, D.C. She’s also performing at other very cool venues like Baby’s All Right in Brooklyn on October 17. For now, check out the full Genevieve Stokes catalog and most importantly, “Dreamer,” wherever you get your music.
