Flume is Back… Finally
Flume, the Australian-born LA-based producer has returned with his first single since his 2019 mixtape Hi This Is Flume. The track, Say Nothing, features fellow Australian MAY-A. Known for his expansive electronic-dance music, the Grammy-winning musician has been a top EDM artist ever since his 2012 debut. Since then, Flume has created colorful dance music with the likes of SOPHIE, JPEGMAFIA, Tove Lo, and more.
Now, Flume is beginning the start of a new era. His new single is a soaring electronica track accompanied by a visually pleasing music video inspired by the flora and fauna of Australia. On the track, MAY-A’s rich vocals sing “You talk but at the same time, say nothing/Now all I see is daylight when you’re gone.” on the pre-chorus. “Say nothing, say nothing” she repeats over and over again in the chorus. The lyrics scream about a lover that you want to rid your mind of. Further, MAY-A’s voice perfectly captures the desperation that comes with trying to forget someone.
Say Nothing Shows the Development of His Craft
For the production, Flume deftly matches the lyrics with the emotion. He creates a soundscape that emotes the constant back in forth of leaving someone. The song is a constant push and pull. In the verses, you feel the calm of self-assurance. Then, in the chorus, you undergo the manic feeling of not being heard. Intentionally, throughout the track Flume almost brings you to a climax then sweeps it away. He creates a perfect sense of anxiety before eventually going full-throttle at the end. Altogether, it’s a purposefully created song and shows the development of Flume’s craft.
In addition to the single, Flume also announced his next album via Twitter. Palaces is releasing on May 20th. The 13-track album is his third and includes an array of features. Some of which are LAUREL, oklou, and Caroline Polachek. With over-the-top visuals and a fresh group of collaborators, many are anticipating the release.
