Created back in 2010 in Brisbane, popular Australian indie-pop group Cub Sport has been on the rise ever since. The band features mainstays such as Zoe Davis on keyboard, bass guitar and vocals; Tim Nelson on lead vocals and keyboards; Sam “Bolan” Netterfield on keyboards and vocals; and Dan Puusaari on drums. Since their start, they have released five studio albums: This Is Our Vice, Bats, Cub Sport, Like Nirvana and Jesus at the Gay Bar. Out of all five albums, three have been in the top twenty spots on the ARIA Albums chart. Like Nirvana reached the number two spot. The band’s most popular album, Jesus at the Gay Bar, reached the number one spot.
Throughout the years, the band has also received many notable awards. The albums Cub Sport and Like Nirvana received AIR nominations in 2020 and 2021 for Best Independent Pop Album or EP. Their hit single, “Always Got the Love,” received a Best Independent Song of the Year nomination. It also won for Best Independent Dance, Electronic or Club Single. The band also received nominations for three ARIA Awards. Those include Jesus at the Gay Bar for Best Group and Best Independent Release. The album also won Best Cover Art. At the National Live Music Awards, the band won for Best Queensland Live Act of the Year for 2019. A year later, Zoe Davis received another nomination for Live Instrumentalist of the Year for 2020.
At the Queensland Music Awards, another hit single, “Do You Hear,” won for Song of the Year and Best Pop Song of the Year in 2012. In 2017, the band won the BQQ People’s Choice Awards for Most Popular Group. Last but not least, Jesus at the Gay Bar won Album of the Year.
As the group has seen success in the last few years, time will only tell what they have in store for the future.
