A few months back, we brought you an MD Music Discovery on the DIY indie pop project, Adult Mom. Last year, Adult Mom released Driver, an intensely emotional record that reflects on the good, the bad, and the ugly. And now, Adult Mom frontperson Stevie Knipe teams up with Summer Canibals’ Jessica Boudreaux for a cover of Taylor Swift’s Lover track, “Cruel Summer.”
Adult Mom and Jessica Boudreaux’s Moody Take on “Cruel Summer”
The duo gives the traditionally energetic track a grungy yet soft transformation, taking it from a pop anthem to a sad-girl bop. The first thing you notice is the slightly punky bassline and softer percussion that glides into the chorus. They keep the chorus ethereal and feathery like Swift. And even though it’s not as colorful and celebratory as Swift’s original, the payoff of this dreamy track is still the same.
This cover comes right before the release of Jessica Boudreaux’s EP, I Think My Heart Loves To Break. Check out the music video for the lead single, “Actor” here and listen to the whole EP on June 24.
And it seems like Adult Mom’s Stevie Knipe is a Swiftie. They covered “Starlight” for the ReRed Compilation in 2019, a tribute to Taylor Swift’s Red.
In more Swiftie news, it’s rumored that Taylor’s next re-recorded album will be 1989. Back in early May, Taylor dropped “This Love (Taylor’s Version),” an airy, poetic track near the end of the tracklist of 1989. One big hint was the 1989 Shop merch store that appeared on Taylor’s website when the track dropped.
