A Beginner’s Guide to Jakey

Jakey

Okay guys, I’m really happy to be talking about the man, the myth, the legend… Jakey. Otherwise known as NakeyJakey, this brand spankin’ new soul to the music industry, is a fantastic YouTuber. Homie’s made some of the funniest and most entertaining videos about all kinds of subjects. With the most centered topic being video games and growing up, for a while now we’ve known he’s been cookin’ up something special. Now, there was indeed a delay… a long one. However, Jakey came out with a full on stealth drop of his debut album: ROMCOM. And I’m happy to say it was worth the wait!

Jakey: Self-Made And Self-Released

“produced and recorded by myself (Jacob Matthew Christensen) in a bunch of different states inside a bunch of different rooms and closets and airbnbs and friends houses and … yeah. here’s what I got. i hope u like it”

That’s what the man himself said on his second channel on YouTube regarding the release. I have to be completely honest with you, it isn’t a surprise that a YouTuber’s turned into an alt-hip hop artist. But what I’ve found with people like Jakey and Joji, is that what they really make is music. Let me explain.

Firstly, there is an incredibly interesting dichotomy between Jakey and his music. There’s a lot of who he is from his YouTube content in the music. From the use of audio clips and references that really only he can come up with, to the passionate presentation. But, this isn’t the same thing for someone like Joji, because his music career is a complete departure from the character he created that garnered his viral stardom.

So now that you know what you see (or hear) is what you get with Jakey, below are the top three for me.

“Drive Off A Bridge”

Big great. Big ups. Honestly, fantastic decision Jakey! Opening up the album with the full version of the tease at the end of Pine Barrens last year. It’s awesomely unique and I love it!

“Survival Horror”

In addition, beginning with a hip-hop use of “I ain’t get no sleep cuz of y’all” is just perfect. Then Jakey hooks me in with his flow and great chorus! C’mon now, what’s not to love!

“Tommy Hanks”

How you gon’ make a boppin’ love track, Jakey? That piano- just YES! So yeah S+ Tier, bud.

Completely self-recorded, produced, and released this man is worth your time! Go and give ‘em a listen on YouTube or Spotify! For more on your favorites and unknowns check out our Word and Drops sections.
