Fujii Kaze is 100% a name to pay attention to. After making a major splash (to the tune of hundreds of millions of streams) in his home country of Japan, the 27-year-old singer & multi-instrumentalist appears poised for a US breakout, highlighted in no small part by the fact that he caught the attention of PC Music’s A.G. Cook even before venturing stateside in earnest. Following a spate of joint releases in the past year, the duo just doubled for more, releasing a fresh new single. Fujii Kaze Is Undeniably Cheery On “Feelin’ Go(o)d”
For those familiar with P.C. Music and Cook’s previous endeavors, the sheer feel-good energy of this song may catch you a bit off guard. While certainly that back catalog—uniting the likes of Sophie, Caroline Polachek and the aforementioned Brat Princess herself—contains some positive overtones, there’s an undeniable sense of either irony or outsiderness that marks that catalog. The J-pop stylings of Kaze & “Feelin’ Go(o)d” contain no such thing; the translation of the hook is as follows: “Sunset’s kissing busy streets / As we’re swaying in the breeze / My heart’s totally lost for words / All that I’m feelin’ is love.”
Even if the aesthetics of “Feelin’ Go(o)d” run counter to the expectations of long-time P.C. Music devotees, there are still some trappings of A.G. Cook’s previous work that shine through in the mix. The overly bright, glossy synths sit foremost in that group, a piece of pop production turned up way past 11 in trademark winking style. Though Kaze’s performance over top mirrors his own previous releases, his silky delivery over top gets a different dimension entirely when taken in the context of what Cook provides.
Does This Collab Mean Crossover Success Down The Line?
Though the music stands on its own merits, we’d be remiss not to mention some of the behind-the-scenes dealings that inform where Fujii Kaze might be headed in the future. After topping the Japanese Billboard Charts on several occasions, he’s set his sights stateside, both embarking on a country-wide tour and signing to Republic Records for a multi-album deal. With A.G. Cook’s sound and production suddenly rising to the mainstream this summer, there aren’t many music industry characters more suited to sit in the captain’s chair for this sort of global crossover, and should this new duo accomplish that goal, it’d check off a major accomplishment on both of their already stacked resumes.
