“[I] Made something special for you guys for the holidays,” Sabrina Carpenter said on Instagram, announcing the fruitcake EP. The “Feather” singer’s new project features six naughty-or-nice tracks, highlighted by last year’s parody, “A Nonsense Christmas.”
While “A Nonsense Christmas” opens the record with sensual tongue-in-cheek puns, the next track (“buy me presents”) introduces the classic holiday pop lyricism and production with Carpenter’s signature bratty-sweet flare.
The holiday extravaganza continues with “santa doesn’t know you like i do,” offering a cozy R&B track that would be a great sister to Ariana Grande’s Christmas & Chill EP.
The heartbreaking “cindy lou who” doesn’t compare to the funky nostalgia of “is it new years yet?” Where the former is an unlit yule log, a bluesy track brewed with longing and hurt, the latter hotly anticipates the new year with up-tempo trumpets.
Of course, the closing “white xmas” samples Bing Crosby’s all-time winter classic with Carpenter’s da-da adlibs and doo-wap percussion. The “Nonsense” singer brings a cutesy teenage restlessness to fruitcake while modernizing the holiday music in the same spirit of Kelly Clarkson, Mariah Carey, Cher and more.
In other Sabrina Carpenter news, she recently opened for Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour on its South America leg, including Mexico City. To close out the year, the superstar will continue her iconic and spontaneous “Nonsense” outros at the Jingle Ball shows.
