In that same article, Professor Jonathan Taplin makes astute observations about this phenomenon:

“I think what’s happening is there’s a big cultural shift going on. The women are putting forth a vision of rebirth and vulnerability. In come the women, whether it’s Brandi Carlile or Taylor Swift or Karol G with this very positive, happy, upbeat view of life [after COVID]. There’s a good future. People don’t want to hear all the time that the world just sucks. Beyoncé’s tour is called ‘Renaissance,’ which literally means rebirth. And Taylor Swift talks about hope, finding yourself and going through a journey of terrors and sweet dreams. It’s very vulnerable. Audiences want this positive, vulnerable-seeking vision that the women have.”

But Taylor Swift and Beyonce aren’t the only women in music responsible for female fans spending money on tickets, travel, merch, hotels, restaurants, and parking all just to see their favorite performers. Musicians like boygenius (Lucy Dacus, Julian Baker, Phoebe Bridgers), P!NK, Mitski, Lana Del Rey, and Dua Lipa are dominating the music industry at this moment.

The future looks bright for women in music The music industry was once completely dominated and controlled by men. But, with every year, more and more women are not only becoming major players as artists, but several are working in high-power positions in the industry. As for the fans, spaces are becoming more inclusive and opening up to women of all kinds. Plus, they are respected as a major reason why their country’s economies are boosted.
