Red, White & Royal Blue has just premiered on Amazon Prime Video and fans are already in love with it.
Red, White & Royal Blue (Spoilers Ahead)
The “swooniest” movie of the year has hit Amazon Prime Video. Red, White & Royal Blue is a long-awaited movie for many fans. Those who have read Casey McQuiston’s 2019 book have wanted to see Alex and Henry on the big screen ever since the book came out.
Red, White & Royal Blue is an LGBTQ+ romantic comedy about Alex Claremont-Diaz (Taylor Zakhar Perez) and Prince Henry (Nicholas Galitzine) and their classic rivals-to-lovers relationship. Alex is the son of the first female president of the U.S., and Henry is Britain’s beloved second prince. The two go from enemies fighting at a royal wedding and landing in the cake to boyfriends waving at a crowd of thousands of people who support their relationship. Filled with loving, intimate glances and stellar one-liners, the film is soft, silly, and sexy. It has several comforting scenes and messages, and a tooth-achingly sweet happy ending.
Now, the budget for the film may not have been amazing, and the green screen scenes might make those with keen eyes cringe. Nevertheless, the sets and locations the film did have were stunning and well done. The film’s content and value far outweigh what it lacks.
“History, huh?”
Aside from the characteristic rom-com hijinks and steamy moments, the movie also broaches subjects like acceptance, privacy, safe sex, support, and using power to make a difference.
Below are just some of the scenes that make the film more than simply a Hallmark-esque rom-com:
- Alex’s Catholic dad being completely accepting
- Alex and Henry making sure their first time together is comfortable and safe
- Alex’s speech after his and Henry’s private emails are leaked
- Henry standing up to his family for himself and Alex
- A cute, yet much-appreciated safe sex talk from Alex’s mom
There is no doubt that Red, White & Royal Blue works to, not only provide a quintessential rom-com for the LGBTQ+ community, but also deliver a film that presents topics relevant to the community that don’t normally get enough exposure or attention in mainstream media.
