Disney Postpones Movie Sequels Amidst Writers Strike

As of June 13th, it was announced that the release date to a number of movie sequels are officially postponed. These include the Avatar sequels, a new Star Wars movie, and the live-action Moana. According to Variety, “production delays and the ongoing WGA strike are part of the reason behind the total overhaul of the release plans.” As another reason is unknown at this point, the consequences have had both negative and positive effects. For one, the time between the Avatar sequels could potentially make the movies better. Especially the visual effects and the setting that are crucial to the films.

Producer Jon Landau wrote on Twitter, according to Variety: “Each Avatar film is an exciting but epic undertaking that takes time to bring the quality we as filmmakers strive for and audiences have come to expect. The team is hard at work and can’t wait to bring the audience back to Pandora in December 2025.”

As far as new release dates go, the third installment to Avatar will now be released on December 19th, 2025. The fourth in 2029 and the last one in 2031, 22 years after the first film came out in 2009. The new Star Wars movie, which does not have a title yet, has now been shifted to December, 18th, 2026. Other movies like Deadpool 3 to November 8th, 2024, Captain America: Brave New World to July 26th, 2024. With all the postponements, the list has only become lengthier since one postponement has only led to another. Given all these movies have been made or bought by Disney, there is no telling if any other postponements will occur in the near future. Especially with the writers’ strike being at the center of it all.
