Women’s US World Cup Team Announced by Host of Celebrities

With the FIFA Woman’s World Cup finally here, American’s are excited to watch the US try to win another title. In a video on Twitter, celebrities like the Biden’s, Taylor Swift, Shaquille O’Neal and others helped announce the picks. President Biden started the announcement to CNN, “for nearly forty years, the US Women’s National Soccer Team has epitomized what it means to be a champion. From lifting trophies, to fighting for gender equality, these women have been a source of inspiration to Americans of all ages. Our family included.” Jill Biden added that she “can’t wait to see this team soar at the 2023 Women’s World Cup.” 

Big Names Return to US Squad 

With big names like Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe returning to the squad, there are also some new faces. To her surprise, Taylor Swift received the honor announce Alex Morgan. According to CNN, Swift mentioned in her announcement that “the striker was someone who she considers ‘a friend. Someone I’m a massive fan of.” Swift also added she was a huge fan of the whole team and how she could not wait to see them all play. Megan Thee Stallion announced Megan Rapinoe. According to Billboard, she nicknamed Rapinoe “The Legend”, mentioning “she has shined for years with the women’s soccer team, and she is going to continue to do so at this year’s World Cup. Congratulations girl, and bring home another title!”

This year’s Women’s World Cup will be co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand. The hosting cities include Auckland, Dunedin, Hamilton, Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney. Coming into the Cup with the top ranking, they will be part of the E group. One that puts them in with the nations of the Netherlands, Portugal and Vietnam. Coverage of the Women’s World Cup starts on July 20th and will end on August 20th. The US will start the tournament off playing Vietnam staring July 21st. As the squad is especially good, hopefully the team can come back with another trophy.
