As “Timeless with Playboi Carti” Heads Toward Top 10, A Look At The Weeknd

"Dancing In The Flames" delivers another glossy, high-production effort for The Weeknd as his grand finale nears closer.

We’ve been building to this moment for quite some time. In the aftermath of Abel Tesfaye’s latest album, Dawn FM, the multi-time platinum singer has promised that whatever comes next, it’ll be the last release under his alias of more than a decade. With “Dancing In The Flames” now released on all streaming platforms, the finale of the The Weeknd project is looming. Here’s everything you need to know about the superstar’s latest effort and what we can expect in the coming weeks.

Put simply, “Dancing In The Flames” doesn’t particularly chart any new territory for the Weeknd, relying once again on heavy use of 1980s-era synthesizers and characteristically stellar vocal harmonies for much of its appeal. Indeed, while the “Wicked Games” singer has teased that this project will see him exploring a wide variety of new styles, the early indications point towards retro ballads for this capstone on his career so far. “Take Me Back To LA,” performed at his recent record-breaking performance in Sao Paolo, exemplifies the unifying sound that’s quickly emerging for this latest LP.

How “Dancing In The Flames” Connects To The Final The Weeknd LP

On top of the musical bonafides here, it’s worth noting that there was a decent corporate push behind this single, chiefly with the track lining up with Apple’s most recent product showcase. The music video for the song is reportedly shot on their latest iPhone 16. Comparatively to the rest of the Weeknd catalog, “Dancing In The Flames” is notably on the more reserved side, making this choice both for a single and for such a major conglomerate spotlight a curious one. While the single is likely a grower over time, perhaps it’ll reach a similar status to “Take My Breath,” a past lead single that failed to capture top-of-the-charts status upon debut, but quickly climbed as its album cycle went on.

That said, gold certifications are a dime a dozen for The Weeknd, and even if “Dancing In The Flames” doesn’t grab you the instant you press play, his track record speaks for itself, and this will likely serve as another high chart entry and A-list playlist material in the coming weeks. We don’t have a concrete release date for Hurry Up Tomorrow just yet, but multiple outlets report an expected 2024 launch. Catch “Dancing In The Flames” and all of The Weeknd catalog wherever you stream your music.
