To say we’ve been following Anna Shoemaker for a while would be an understatement. Tracking the indie singer/songwriter throughout her journey has only increased our level of appreciation for her journey and evolution as an artist, adding a ton of anticipation for what she’ll unveil with her sophomore record, Someone Should Stop Her. As that record’s release date nears, the Philly-born multi-talent has let loose several singles from the record, continuing that spate with the just-dropped Anna Shoemaker single, “Iced Coffee.”
“Iced Coffee” Gives A Further Preview Of What The Second Anna Shoemaker Record Will Bring
For those who have followed her along with us, “Iced Coffee” slides comfortably into what we now expect from Anna Shoemaker. Propelled by a woozy, melancholic undercurrent of guitar, we get a smattering of little moments and vignettes, all combining for a tale of last-minute hesitations after a breakup. The start of the song quickly reveals its namesake, Anna Shoemaker, dipping into that classic indie breakfast:
“Iced coffee reminds me of us
I need it when I wake up
Cigarettes start to taste like you
When they burn out way too soon.”
Additionally, Shoemaker’s trademark stream-of-consciousness delivery, pausing for breath in the middle of thoughts and breaking in unorthodox spots, only adds to the disquieted nature of the song. Look at the hook for ample examples of both of those motivating factors: “I’m driving my new truck / Away from all your s*** I said / I’m done with I’m lying I love you / More than money, but I spent it on Jesus / I say this s*** so much I might believe it.”
Raw emotion and ground-level storytelling continue to be a strong suit of the singer’s catalog, again the case with the (paradoxically) searing “Iced Coffee,” embracing the contradictions of viscerally rejecting actions that are sometimes in our best interest.
In addition to letting loose some of the tracklist, we now have a concrete date for Someone Should Stop Her. Catch up on “Iced Coffee” and all the recent Anna Shoemaker releases wherever you get your music, especially ahead of the record’s February 21, 2025, release.
Sticking with Anna, we caught the Anna Shoemaker NYC show from this same tour—tap in for the sights and sounds from that night.
