Who is XG?
XG, the one-of-a-kind group, was formed by XGALX, a subsidiary of Avex. Made up of seven Japanese members, the group takes a different approach to other girl groups. XG are a global girl group that promotes in Japan, Korea and the US. Their songs are in all English and take on a hip-hop concept. Leader JURIN, HARVEY, MAYA and COCONA are the four rappers of the group, and are some of the best in the industry. CHISA, JURIA, HINATA, JURIN, MAYA and HARVEY are the vocalists of the group. As you can see, some members fit into both positions, proving they are a multitalented girl group.
The group has been preparing for debut since 2017, training hard to become a strong force in the music scene. XG made their hard-hitting debut in 2022 with the song “Tippy Toes.” The group served one of the best choreographies in recent years while showing their incredible ability to switch between rapping and singing effortlessly. After two years, XG have multiple singles and released their first ever mini album, New DNA, in 2023. Now in 2024, the group has announced their second mini album slated for a November 8 release.
“SOMETHING AIN’T RIGHT” Review
Ahead of their second mini album, XG dropped their pre-release single on July 26 with an accompanying music video. According to XG’s official website, “‘SOMETHING AIN’T RIGHT’ is a retro song based on garage rhythms, with a catchy refrain that brings out the individuality of each of XG’s seven members, and a variety of sounds hidden within the minimalism of the track.”
The track is about the girls knowing there is something going wrong between them and their lovers. XG’s love interests fail to reciprocate the same energy as they had previously. The girls realize they are being played as the guys are avoiding XG altogether. The girls know that their relationships are over and want the boys to stop acting childish as their time is precious. It is a relatable track that expresses frustrations and wanting better for themselves as they deserve better. Instead of beating around the bush, the girls want transparency. This is easily one of if not their best songs. A funky beat against an infectious chorus and catchy verses are the recipe for a hit.
XG’s creative team proves again that they will continue to raise the bar in each music video. The styling is iconic with a robotic, alienesque, goddess feel to it. The video does a good job of showing the choreography in different locations, such as a parking garage, the street, an office, etc. From what I could gather, the video is about them living their daily lives waiting for their significant other to come and say something to their faces. The video was well shot and, after each release, XG outdo themselves in the music video department.
