Toby Keith passed away on the morning of February 5th. He was 62 years old. The country music star was battling stomach cancer.
The official social media statement shared by his family regarding his death reads, “Toby Keith passed peacefully last night on Feb. 5 surrounded by his family. He fought his fight with grace and courage. Please respect the privacy of his family at this time.”
Keith was diagnosed with stomach cancer in late 2021, but decided to keep his diagnosis private until early 2022. In an interview released earlier this year with Oklahoma News 9’s Robin Marsh, Keith spoke about his wife Tricia Lucus’ support.
“She’s been a trooper. She’s the best nurse. The first time we went to Houston, to the hospital, she stepped right in and she just took control and said, ‘We got this. Let’s go.’ So she’s like, ‘We’re going to get this and don’t worry about it.'”
News 9 released the interview only weeks ago. Toby Keith performed his last show only 2 months ago, on the Dolby Live stage at Park MGM in Las Vegas. The day before his death, he shared footage of one of his final concerts with the caption, “And that’s a wrap on the weekend, y’all. Back to it.”
Toby Keith’s Legacy
Country star Toby Keith left behind a multi-decade legacy. Last September, he was honored with the Country Music Icon award at the People’s Choice Country Awards. During his speech, he said, “Bet you thought you’d never see me in skinny jeans. I want to thank the almighty for allowing me to be here tonight. You’ve been riding shotgun with me for a little while. […] A lot of people go into making a big career like this of 30 years.”
Toby Keith is survived by his wife Tricia Lucus and their three children.
