Blinding Talent
Over the weekend, The Weeknd led the pack in wins for the Billboard Music Award with 10 to his name. And even though his fellow Canadian Artists Drake got Artist of The Decade, The Weeknd doesn’t seem too far behind him.
We also seem to be entering a new era for The Weeknd as well. In one of his many acceptance speeches he said “The after hours are done and the dawn is coming”. Indicating that the red suit period is over and he has some new music in the works.
By the end of the night, The Weeknd ended up taking home awards for Top Artist, Top R&B Album, Top Radio Song, and more.
The “After Hours”
Additionally, The Weeknd has received the 2020 Global Digital Single Award for the septuple-platinum hit “Blinding Lights”. The award recognizes the best-selling single of the year worldwide. This looks across individual track downloads as well as paid and ad-supported streams.
The Weeknd’s most recent project, After Hours, released in March of 2020, also garnered multiple certifications from the RIAA. The double-platinum album featured the tracks “Save Your Tears,” “After Hours,” and “In Your Eyes” which all progressed to platinum. Additionally, “Blinding Lights” has officially been minted seven-times platinum.
This news comes after The Weeknd’s historical Superbowl performance back in February, which left many speechless. Ironically, even with this year proving to be his most successful, we still can’t get over that the Grammys snubbed him of all nominations this year.
Now that the TV award shows are in full circuit, The Weeknd shows no signs of slowing down.
This Thursday, May 27, he will also perform at the iHeartRadio Music Awards. Alongside him will be Ariana Grande, Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak (AKA Silk Sonic), Dan + Shay, and Doja Cat.
I wouldn’t be surprised if he took home some more hardware after the show too.
