Welcome to Music Daily’s Trending Tracks, where we highlight the artists and trends occupying the music industry’s attention. Some come out of the woodwork, others have endured a months-long crusade to greatness. Nonetheless, all of them are captivating the short-circuited minds of Gen-Z social media users.
Today, pop princess Tate McRae generates some buzz during her THINK LATER tour stop at Madison Square Garden with the steamy TM3 tease, “It’s ok I’m ok.” Ahead, the viral status of “Symphony” by Clean Bandit (feat. Zara Larsson) and “Disco” by Surf Cruise also top this week’s Trending Tracks chart!
“Symphony” by Clean Bandit (feat. Zara Larsson)
The dance trio’s 2017 single can be seen on TikTok nearly a decade later with Lisa Franklin-esque dolphins and hyperbolic, untrue yet hysterical statements like “Just got my lobotomy at Claire’s.” Zara Larsson’s vocals, especially while belting the chorus epiphany (“I just want to be part of your symphony!”), itches that single part of the brain, adding a bit of necessary context to its nearly two million video creations. The bombastic love ballad not only went No. 1 in our hearts but was Larsson’s first chart-topping single in the UK. Stream “Symphony” by Clean Bandit (feat. Zara Larsson) below!
“Disco” by Surf Curse
Garage-rock acolytes Surf Curse see a spike in fame now that their 2019 hazy kicker “Disco” is climbing the Billboard chart, hugely in part to a multi-person TikTok trend. It spent three weeks at No. 2 on the Billboard TikTok Top 50, with the overpour of streaming bringing the indie track to Billboard Hot Rock & Alternative Songs and Alternative Streaming Songs charts for the first time. “It’s ok I’m ok” by Tate McRae
The Canadian “it” girl sure knows how to make a name for herself in the U.S. with monster hits like “10:35,” “exes” and “greedy”—which recently exceeded over one billion Spotify streams. Now that the THINK LATER World Tour is underway and the press has backed off, McRae needed an excuse to spice things up again. What better reason than to drop a new single, especially with a music video that references pop royalty like Britney Spears (“I Wanna Go”) and The Pussycat Dolls (“When I Grow Up”).
“Honestly, I wrote it last year in Sweden with ILYA and Savan,” McRae told Rolling Stone about the new single. “I ended up finishing it like four weeks ago and turned it into a fun pop song […] I’m twenty-one now, I feel like I have different perspectives so the whole song kind of shifted for me, and I saw it in a brand new life that I didn’t before.” The heat on “It’s ok I’m ok” is enough to melt popsicles and give McRae’s new-gen contemporaries a MasterClass in what it takes to be a triple-threat (dancing) pop star today.
