Shakira Will Receive the Video Vanguard Award at the 2023 MTV VMAs

Shakira will make history at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards. The Colombian singer, indeed, will be the first artist born in Latin America to receive the prestigious award that the biggest stars receive for their legacy in music videos. The Vanguard Award honors the lifetime achievement of artists and music video directors who have made “outstanding contributions” and left a “profound impact” on pop culture.

Women have thoroughly dominated this category in recent years. Shakira follows Rihanna (2016), P!nk (2017), Jennifer Lopez (2018), and the most recent artists, Missy Elliott (2019) and Nicky Minaj (2022).

Shakira will also perform some of the hits of her incredible music career, 17 years after her last VMAs performance. Indeed, the most recent VMAs performance of the songwriter from Barranquilla was in 2006. At that time, she teamed up with Jean to perform “Hips Don’t Lie.”

2023 has definitely been Shakira’s year in terms of music, attention, and hype. Starting with “Shakira: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53,” the song dropped in January and features the Argentinian producer Bizarrap. And then, the artist followed up with “TQG” feat. KAROL G, and her latest “Copa Vacia” with Manuel Turizo.

Shakira has been able to rebrand her name, and people noticed it. This new Shakira is perhaps more liked than the one we have listened to for years, and we aren’t heartbroken yet.
