Selena Gomez may not have the best romantic reputation, but “Love On” exemplifies the heart-pumping pursuit of a great connection packaged as an infectious song. The Monsters & Strangerz and Isaiah Tejada-produced track is Gomez’s first 2024 entry, with last year’s braggadocious pop banger, “Single Soon,” debuting at No.19 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
The two singles are expected to be on the follow-up to 2020’s Rare LP, which is yet to have a release date. Her new album is “in the works,” Gomez tells Vanity Fair, saying it will be “really powerful, strong, very pop.” She added, “The theme generally is freedom — freedom from relationships, freedom from the darkness.”
Inspired by Gomez’s current boyfriend, musician Benny Blanco, the bubbly romance of “Love On” gets the proper music video treatment along the coastline of France. “Qu’est-ce que je vais te nommer?” The French introduction seduces. “Je vais te nommer, ‘L’amour.’ ‘L’amour tendre.'” In English, the voiceover translates to “What am I going to name you? I will name you, ‘Love.’ ‘Tender love.'”
Given the idyllic foundation, “Love On” unfolds in risqué lyrics, high levels of snogging, sexy architecture and orgasmic vistas of the French revere. Simply put, love is definitely on the singer’s mind while cutely hiding the other promiscuous acts not worth mentioning.
“Thank you Paris for being a home to me for two months!” the 31-year-old said on Instagram. “I loved every moment. Working on this film has completely changed my life. I can’t wait to share more soon! Love you all.”
