The cover for the Pharrell single, “Piece by Piece,” the theme song for the film of the same name.
Does Pharrell Williams have the same 24 hours as the rest of us? He’s appearing in studio sessions with seemingly every major artist and serves as creative director for Louis Vuitton. On top of all that, the Virginia native is amid a promotional effort for his autobiographical feature film. As the October release date for the movie nears closer, “Piece by Piece” gives us an infectious preview of what Pharrell has in store for the silver screen.
Pharrell Aims At “Happy” Style Success With “Piece By Piece”
From the opening moments, it’s impossible to ignore the throwback Neptunes atmosphere that runs through this track. The song utilizes the same retro synths and pads that propelled 2000s songs to the top of the charts. It’s reminiscent of Justin Timberlake’s & many other 2000s artists’ catalogs. To that end, both Timbaland and Timberlake, two of the biggest benefactors of William’s start-of-the-century output, are confirmed to appear in the film, creating some notable synergy between what’s here on wax and what’ll debut on the big screen.
It’s accordingly easy to imagine the animated title sequence that “Piece by Piece” will assuredly soundtrack for Pharrell. While enjoyable without the connection to the Hollywood piece, the lyrics plainly spell out the song’s overall purpose: “I decided long time ago / I will write my own chronicle” or “Finding a brick and where it goes to / We keep stacking high, high, high.” It’s obviously been a bit since Pharrell tackled a full solo project. So, “Piece by Piece” is a strong reminder that the Louis Vuitton head can still very much handle material on his own.
