As the promoters behind Montreal’s Osheaga Fest begin preparations for their next edition in August of 2024, we’re getting some big news for what to expect next summer. The minds behind Osheaga announced Green Day, Noah Kahan and SZA as the headliners for Friday, Saturday and Sunday, already adding a ton of anticipation for August’s festivities.
The History of Osheaga Fest Headliners
An eclectic group at its face, Noah Kahan, SZA and Green Day reflect the changing landscape of Osheaga Fest headliners. The inaugural edition of the festival back in 2006 was strictly indie-focused, with Dinosaur Jr., Sonic Youth and The Flaming Lips among the biggest names on tap some 15 years ago. That trend would continue in the next few years, with The Smashing Pumpkins, Interpol and Arctic Monkeys as the biggest headlines in 2007, and The Killers leading things in 2008.
Over time, the Montreal event has since seen its profile increase greatly and its sonic range increase in kind. The inclusion of more genres outside of indie has led to some huge trios of headliners over its three-day runtime. Last year, Billie Eilish, Kendrick Lamar and Rufus de Sol did so. 2022, it was Arcade Fire, Future and Dua Lipa, and in 2019, The Lumineers, The Chemical Brothers and Childish Gambino were on lead duty.
It isn’t a stars and scrubs situation for Osheaga, either. Though we’re still a ways away from the full lineup announcement, previous years are again instructive in what we can expect. Further down the list in 2022, you could still find hugely talented acts like Lil Yachty, Rina Sawayama, Carly Rae Jepsen and Fred Again… Now a bit removed from its solely indie origins, Osheaga has consistently been able to attract a diverse range of talent to Montreal, making it a true destination in each year’s festival schedule.
While we await more artists added to the lineup, you can get a headstart on the 2024 edition by heading to their website, either to get your hands on tickets or sign up for updates when we do get the full list.
