As of Tuesday, June 27th, Angela Bassett, Mel Brooks, and several others will receive honorary Oscars at this year’s Governors Awards.
Honorary Oscars for Those in the Limelight
At this year’s Oscars, back in February, Angela Bassett came close to winning an Oscar herself for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. However, in the end, she ended up winning a Golden Globe for it. She has also been nominated several times for films such as What’s Love Got To Do With It. The honorary Oscar all makes her one of four African American actresses to receive more than one Oscar nomination.
According to the New York Times, the awards will “honor four trailblazers who have transformed the film industry and inspired generations of filmmakers and movie fans.”
There are three more people who will receive such an accolade. Mel Brooks, editor Carol Littleton, and Michelle Satter of the Sundance Institute.
Brooks, who just recently turned 97 years old, is receiving his award even after already having won an Oscar. Back in 1969, he won for his debut film The Producers. Even after winning, he exceeded Hollywood’s standards by becoming a notable director. His other popular films include Young Frankenstein and Blazing Saddles. He has won every entertainment award imaginable, holding Grammys, Emmys, Tonys, and an Oscar in his name.
Honorary Oscars for Those Behind the Scenes
Michelle Satter, the founding director of the Sundance Institute, has spent four decades training independent filmmakers such as Wes Anderson, Darren Aronofsky, Miranda July, and Ryan Coogler.
Carol Littleton, on the other hand, has received a nomination for editing ET: The Extra-Terrestrial. Additionally, she has worked with directors like Lawrence Kasdan and Johnathan Demme.
The awards ceremony is one of the biggest events in Hollywood today, like the regular Oscars. The event includes emotional speeches and a packed ballroom of Oscar voters. The height of the event is simply another way to say congratulations to four of the most decorated people in Hollywood.
