With her long-awaited album due this fall, Nicki Minaj shares the nostalgic and emotional new single “Last Time I Saw You.” The first taste of Pink Friday’s sequel—Pink Friday 2—is a toned-down, vibey R&B track perfect for long drives. The forthcoming album is out November 17, and will mark Minaj’s first studio album since 2018’s Queen.
Different from her hard-sounding output lately (“Red Ruby Da Sleeze” and “Super Freaky Girl”), “Last Time I Saw You” leans into the pop-rap style that defined the rapper’s early career (“Starships” and “Super Bass”).
“Beggin me to stay and then you walk away / There’s something that you wanted to say / I was in a rush and you say you were crushed / But I said I’d be back, it’s OK,” Minaj sings over a lush, rhythmic, indie-inspired beat from ATL Jacob.
In a newsletter to the Barbz, the 40-year-old wrote, “I have not been excited about the release of a song to this extent for maybe… I don’t know I can’t even tell you, I don’t even remember when! I hope that it’s therapeutic for you,” she said.
“I hope that even after, it makes you reflect and that if you are reflecting on a time, or a person that you wish you could go back in time and have a do over etc… I hope that you are still able to smile at the end of the song by realizing that you now have a chance to treat the people that you love, that are still in your life the way that expresses to them what they mean to you.”
Minaj continues in the newsletter
She concludes that Pink Friday 2 will be “the best album” in years. Minaj continues boasting Pink Friday 2‘s supremacy on X (formally known as Twitter) in a series of unserious, funny posts. The original Pink Friday topped the Billboard 200 chart back in 2010, spawning hits such as “Moment for Life,” “Your Love,” and “Right Thru Me.”
