Metronomy Declare “It’s Good to Be Back”
Genre-bending group Metronomy announced that their seventh studio album, Small World, is due February 18 on Because Music. They recently shared the lead single, “It’s Good to Be Back,” an uplifting and energetic return from 2019’s Metronomy Forever. Throughout press materials, frontman Joseph Mount says: “Part of me was thinking, ‘What is the lamest platitude people are going to be saying coming out of the past two years?’, but at the same time, I was thinking how it will be true and how it might feel doing things again.”
A Melodic New Single
On this new single, the English indie electronic collective continues to play up the playful energy of their last full length release. “It’s Good to Be Back” is a catchy, snappy bop with jangly synthesizers dazzling all over. However, the production on this latest single seems to be far less complex than that of your average Metronomy song. But that’s not to say it isn’t a good song. Simply, it didn’t have the same eccentricities and quirks we’ve come to expect from Metronomy. Especially for the first single from the group. Their last album, Metronomy Forever, triumphed in creativity and Mount’s ability to harmoniuosly combine disparate styes, making this new single feel constrained.
An Album on the Way
The single comes with a colorful Groundhog Day inspired video from the director duo Dreamjob. Prior to the single’s release, Metronomy dropped the Posse EP, with features from Spill Tab, Pinty, Biig Piig, and more. Looking ahead, Metronomy is dropping Small World, on February 18.
