Melanie Martinez Releases Comeback Single “DEATH”

Melanie Martinez lays her “Cry Baby” persona to rest for her comeback single “DEATH,” an electronic-synth rebirth. “Portals screams death is life is death is life is death is life,” she says of upcoming album, out March 31.

The same eerie chant appears in the single’s snippet on her official Instagram. The video displays a mushroom growing in the foggy night with the words “RIP Crybaby” written inside a heart.

“DEATH”Analysis

Martinez’s new artistic phase favors faerie, celestial power, and otherworldly bodies and reincarnation. Along with a new sound, the singer emerges from an egg as a pink creature with four eyes, face prosthetics, scales and talons spewing figurative yet cryptic lyrics that explore life’s secrets.

Although it’s a drastic change from her pastel cutes-y character, fans are loving the new single and her Björk-adjacent creation.

Pulsing slow-scaling guitars creeps into a minute and a half autotuned eulogy.  Reflective ponderings and seance summonings take up the space of rhymes.

“My body has died, but I’m still alive / Look over your shoulder, I’m back from the dead / Lightin’ all your candles to draw me in / Sayin’ all the same things, I’m gone this time / Your words mean nothin’, so take ’em back.”

“DEAD” Lyrics by Melanie Martinez

The repetitive “I’m Back From The Dead” chorus loses the song’s ethereal charm and explodes in hard drums, backing screams, and destructured synths. More than literal reincarnation, Martinez signals her return to music after a three-year hiatus. Her last full-lenth album was 2019’s K-12 with the supplementary After School EP in 2020.
